ENGLISH - Film studies

Branstrom -  A fox wants to buy a jumbo pop from the elephant's store but they won't sell it to him.

- The bunny officer steps in to help. 

Technique -  Colour - bright - heartening scene, animated at children so is colourful & engaging 

Light - Warm, Natural, bright - daytimes, hot sunny day, fox/ bunny spotlighting.

- High/low angles - elephants are taller, feels bigger, superior, we aren't meant to like elephants because they won't serve them- brought angrily tone, low. Angles from Fox  pov & high angles down onto fox makes him look small 

Statement- In the 'popsicle' scene, high angles shots are used to show the imbalance of power between characters. 

Evidence - We see this when the elephants are talking to the fox. The low angles shot is used to show how much bigger and more imposing the elephants is than the fox. 

X- Audience- This makes the audience feel sad for the fox because he is being refused service because of his size. 

X - Directors  - The purpose of this is to introduce the idea of stereotyping to the viewer. Appearing large and rough, the elephants' shopkeeper refuses service because he is a fox, Strengthening its idea is the elephant's quote ' Go back to your side town'.

X other technique - Combined with the use of the high angles shots, we see the differences in the characters, rather than the similarities. The high angles point of view makes the fox seem even smaller than the elephants towering over him.  

L real-world link - Issues like this where people are judged on their size, race or religion are not isolated to this film. in the real world, we tackle the ongoing issue of discrimination in every country, even in 2021. 

The hobbits 

Brainstorm- 4 hobbits are hiding under a tree from the Black Rider. They are afraid - see on their faces.

Technique- 

Colour - palette - green, black, dark, nature/natural dull

- feels cold + uninviting. 

Camera: Shots - Focus movement - angles - tilt shot - from the rider to the hiding hobbits, close-ups - hobbits faces - scared, nervous, - bugs - crawling across the hobbits shows how difficult it is to keep still and quiet.

-  Three close-ups on parts o the rider- the horses hooves pawing the ground, the horse's muzzle/bridal with red-eye and the rider's feet hitting the ground. Builds suspense before we see the rider low angle - looking up at the rider, shows hobbits cowering below, makes the rider looks bigger, intimidating, and frightening 

Sound/Music - diegetic sounds - horses hooves approaching bugs crawling, birds, movement of riders armour, the sound of his breathing, little sounds are magnified when we are afraid

Lighting - natural, dim, cold - makes it feel cold and uninviting

Statement - In the 'Black Rider' scene, close-ups show the fear of the characters as they hide.

Example - The four hobbits are running from the black riders, They seek refuge under the roots of an old tree as the rider approaches, Close show us the expressions of fear on the habits faces. 

X - Audience-  This makes the audience feel intimidated and anxious with the hobbits as the unseen enemy arrives.  

X - Directors- The purpose of this is to build suspense before we see the rider. Like the characters, we are afraid even though we don't what is coming.

X link technique -   This combined with close-ups is the use of diegetic sounds including the horses' hooves on the ground, the breathing of the rider and clinking of his armours as he dismounted. This sound adds to the feeling of fear we have seen through the close-ups shots. 

L your real-world connections- Interestingly, Most viewers have felt the fear of being chased and founds before. The allows to connects with the emotions of the characters in these moments 

Dragonheart- The Dragons Maw

Brainstorm - There was a dragon and one man in the field were talking to each other and the dragon got mad then try to eat the men But the men has a sword and he the dragon almost swallow the men but the men put his sword up so the dragon won't eat him.

Technique -

Colour - The colour is the doll, black, dark, and natural because it has a tree and it's green.
