Tomorrow, when the war began ( chapter 16/17)

Read through Chapter 16-17. Use the words in bold to fill in the blanks.

I too had blood on my hands, like the Hermit, and just as I couldn’t tell whether his actions were good or bad, so too I couldn’t tell what mine were. Had I killed out of love of my friends, as part of a noble crusade to rescue friends and family and keep our land free? Or had I killed because I valued my life above that of others? Would it be OK for me to kill a dozen others to keep myself alive? A hundred? A thousand? At what point did I condemn myself to Hell, if I hadn’t already done so? The Bible just said ‘Thou shalt not kill’, then told hundreds of stories of people killing each other and becoming heros , like David with Goliath. That didn’t help me much.

I didn’t feel like a criminal , but I didn’t feel like a hero either. P.216

condemn, blood, criminal, actions, dozen, valued, heroes, crusade

The people we’ve talked to say the soldiers are anxious to keep their noses clean.

They know that sooner or later the United Nations and the Red Cross Will be wandering around, and they don’t want to attract a lot of heat from them. They keep talking about a “clean” invasion . They figure that if there’s no talk of concentration camps and torture and rape and stuff, there’s less chance of countries like America getting involved.’ P.224

invasion, soldiers, concentration,attract, torture, anxious

How are costume used to enhance the story English

Brainstorm:
What happening- - reaping scene  -  2 tributes selected to complete in the Hunger games.
- Best dressed
Describe Costumes - Light colour, neutral tones, old fashioned, simple
-Boys - dross shirts, pants or shorts.
- Girls - hair tidy, dresses or skirts.
- colour - cold, clean , faded - washed and worn a lot.
- older clothes mended
Effect on viewer -think they poor - because clothes are outdated.
- Peacekeepers / Effie in new clean outfits
- think it is a bad living - emotions, all the colour has been clarned
Director Purpose - show the comparison / juxtaposition of the district t the capital
- Show theme 'Rich vs Poor because district doesn't have access
to resources like new clothing.
Other Techniques - Make-up -style = status , Effie eye lashes are long t pink and her face is white. The district has no make- up no access or need for it.

What happening- In the Capitol, Katniss & Peeta just getting off the train, have never been there before.
Describe Costumes- Bright, colourful, neon, extravagant, vibrant oversized.
- Look expensive and more fancy than casual.
-Over  the top - Excessive, more than needed to be practical.
- Head pieces to match , wigs
- Both genders over the top outfits/ wigs/ make-up
Effect on viewer think feel - Things they are rich /greed
- Fashion is shocking / scary to viewer - in the face.
-Show us how shocking/ different things are for katniss & Peeta.
Director Purpose- Again show us theme Rich vs poor - the people in capitol live in extreme luxury compared to the poverty of district.
-People in the capitol have everything.
Other techniques - make-up over the top- caked on so we know they have lots. Men / Women both wear it.
-Setting- concrete , metal, glass, clean , crisp , futuristic technologically advanced.

What happening- in the arena of the hunger games.
Describe costumes -Practical - suitable for fighting - Jacket, boots shirt, long pants
- Colour that will match surroundings - help them hide.
- Tell us about the arena climate.
- Not going for as not much.
Effect on the viewer think feel- Feel like they are dressed for war/ hunting - all dressed same uniform
- All look same-every has the same advantage.
- Makes us less emotionally attached to individuals.
Director Purpose theme - Rich vs poor -everyone is tonally  equal so personal skills become important
-Struggle for power - Tribute the power of the capitol, they have no freedom/ free will at this point

In the reaping scene costume is used effectively to show the theme 'rich vs poor; for example, the capital
tributes are dressed in formal shirts, skirts and trousers. Their clothes are well-worn, weathered and dull. This make us understand the people in District 12 are poor because their best clothes are old and faded compared to the Capitol representative Effie Trinket. this is done to show the juxtaposition bet between
the extreme wealth of the Capitol and the poverty of those in District 12.this worked well with the use of make up as show by Effie. She has lots of makeup on including long pink eyelashes, an extremely white foundation  and pink and gold lips . This tell the viewer that she is wealthy because she can afford extravagant make-up when those in the district can barely afford clothes. This aspect can be compared to the scene where the the tributes arrive off the train in the Capitol. Here we see luxury and excess wealth in the costumes of the capitol citizens compared to the rags worn by peeta and katniss.

Creative Writing Matrix - My remote control life

One day on my way to school, I saw a strange remote laying down in the middle of the road. It had many buttons that was similar to a T.V remote. I thought to myself, a man dropped his remote control while carrying a T.V. I laughed to myself for thinking this way. I picked up the remote, it was surprisingly heavier than my own T.V remote. Thinking I would add to my collection of my junk stuff, I decided to put it in my bag. As I was walking by I saw my friend Tim. He was a chubby short friend. We go to school almost everyday. Finally, we arrived at the school. At the hall, there was the principal who was greeting everybody with a smile. We went in to our classroom. The class started, it was the same old day that was happening over and over again. So I started to talk to Tim and showed him my new found junk to add to my collection. To remove my boredom I used the remote to mute the teacher as a joke. Suddenly the teacher went quiet. The whole class got confused of if the teacher were pulling a prank on them. However, she went silent for a long time until I pressed the unmute button on the remote towards the teacher. She started talking again. My mind was blown since I knew I now have power to control time, sound and many more. I decided to rule the world.

Future self:
That was a story of how I made my most regretful mistake.

Grammar once a week

write the name we use for things he pointed to?
reet-tree
kobo-book
tribba-rabbit
pleap-apple
rast- star
poson-spoon
blate-table
tofo-foot

The names we call different things are called nouns

Spaced-out sentences
Gorf was a super-intelligent being and quickly learned to speak our language. But when he wrote down some facts about this planet, we found them difficult to read, (he didn't use any spaces!)

Rewrite the sentence Gorf said, leaving spaces between the words.

1. The sky on planet Haret is pink.
2,  The Haretians live underground.
3.  Children only go to school once a week.
4. The cars on Haret have square wheels.

sentence is a group of words telling something that makes sense. Write a sentence telling something about the planet you live on. Remember a sentence starts with capital letters and ends with a full stop.
ThechildrenheregotoschooleveryMondaytoFriday. = The children here go to school every Monday to Friday.

Rhyme time
If you look closely. you will see that the words Gorf spoke can be rearranged to make the words we use.     e.g    blate - table   gort - frog   Haret - Earth
These are called anagrams - swapping the letters of a word around to make a new word.

Can you work out some more of Gorf's words? You will find that each set of words rhyme.

Keow = woke
Nagg = gang

Komes = smoke                  Gnaf = fang
Olack = clock                       Yehon = honey
